Gold Coast City Council goal is "sustainability, choice and wellbeing for all".
It has been working closely with AWLQ to improve the welll-being of the community by preventing and rehoming abandoned animals for many years.
GCCC contracts AWLQ to care for its pound animals, and all animals not claimed by their owners are transferred to AWLQ for assessment for rehoming. AWLQ also takes in all surrenders on the
Gold Coast, providing the services of desexing, microchipping, health checks and ongoing health care for all rehomed animals.
As a result of this partnership, Gold Coast City has the lowest euthanasia rate for any city of half a million people or more in Australia.
In 2009/10, GCCC worked with AWLQ and a Stakeholder Coalition comprising breeders, pet industry, wildlife groups, vets, and animal welfare groups to introduce a Breeder Permit system and a Code of Practice for Breeders, as a Pilot Project for the Qld Government to promote responsible breeding and ownership, and prevent unwanted cats and dogs.
It also is piloting a Cat Safe Fencing campaign to promote the range of ways cats can be kept safe and happy in their own yards, and to prevent impounded strays and unowned cats.
Gold Coast City Council's approach identifes the importance of Councils working with and supporting animal welfare initiatives which in turn help achieve animal management objectives.
