  • Moorabool Shire Council is situated in central Victoria with a blend of both rural and residential areas. The Shire Council covers some 2700 sq kilometres and has population close to 30,000.
  • We have a team of 6 dedicated officers who share the same passion in commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership within our municipality.  We pride ourselves on our success rates of re-homing and re-uniting stray animals that enter the Council’s Pound (Safe House).
  • We work within the required legislations under the various Acts and Regulations to ensure that every animal has the best chance of being reunited or re-homed.
  • Moorabool Shire Council endeavours to reunite as many lost animals back with their owners as possible. For those animals that cannot be reunited, and are suitable for rehousing, Council strives to rehouse these animals with suitable new owners.
  • All animals that are rehoused are behaviourally assessed prior to adoption, vet checked, desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.
  • The purpose of the Pound’s rehousing program is to facilitate the placement of stray and unwanted animals in suitable homes, to maintain an animal pound and associated procedures, promote health care and handling, prevent over population and to minimise the cruelty to animals.
  • We consider animals under our care as "our guests" and are never euthanized due to lack of space or simply because an animal’s stay with us has exceeded the legislative time.
  • The Moorabool pet adoption team encourages potential pet owners to acquire an animal companion through rescue and adoption and consider "first option should be adoption".
  • Our team endeavours to ensure that potential pet owners and animals are suitably matched to their lifestyles and consequently more likely to enjoy a long rewarding life together.  When animals are well matched, it increase the chances of a lifetime of compatibility and love.
  • We consider our pound as a Safe House – promoting and enhancing our public image.

Recent Achievements in Getting to Zero:

Moorabool Shire Council established the Moorabool Pet Adoption Facebook page in early 2010 which currently has over 1700 friends. This proactive method of re-homing has set a benchmark for other Councils to follow the lead.  This new social networking forum of communicating has enabled us to re-home dogs, as far away as Queensland and South Australia. We encourage people to download photos to the site of their new pets so that other ‘friends’ can view the rewarding outcomes of adoption.

Support Needed:
