Who we are and what we do:

NARGA's core functions are:

To promote open communication and cooperation amongst rescue groups, volunteers and foster carers thus providing a more efficient cause for bettering the situation for all rescue animals regardless of the species, breed or location.

To further the progress of animal rescue groups, their volunteers and foster carers by providing relevant information, resources, and to provide a voice by lobbying on their behalf.

To educate young and old alike about responsible pet ownership and how, in their everyday lives, they can help the rescue community and animals in need.

To create a fund for emergency financial relief for rescue groups.

To provide foster care training and other training as relevant.

To research and assist in research for causes that may benefit rescue groups and the welfare of animals in general.

G2Z Elements & Strategies:

As NARGA is a newly formed organisation we have not yet had the opportunity to fully implement any particular strategy on the path to G2Z but our core values fully support the initiative and we are actively working towards implementing the following campaigns and activities:

• Targeting vets to:

1. provide low cost services for desexing and microchipping to pension/concession card holders/low income earners;
2. Join the NDN and/or initiate their own discount desexing programs;
3. Provide reduced rates in general for rescue groups.

• Implement a "last litter" program to desex female cats and dogs free of charge when litters are surrendered to a rescue group.

• Educate the general public on the merits and safety of EAD and dispel myths surrounding the early age procedure.

• Provide bulk microchipping services to the general public and provide resources on what to do if they lose their pet or their contact details change etc.

• Encourage council run pounds and shelters to:

1. Provide more suitable opening hours to facilitate an increase in reclaim and rehoming rates;
2. Be more proactive in advertising and promoting found and rehomeable animals;
3. Rehabilitate animals with "behavioural" issues;
4. Provide instant veterinary services to animals which require them under Duty of Care.

• Educate the general public on what is involved in being a responsible pet owner, before they take on a new furry family member.

• Encourage pet shops to:

1. Work with rescue groups to rehome rescued animals;
2. Discourage from sourcing animals elsewhere;
3. Provide hand outs on pet care essentials.

• Provision of foster care training manuals to educate on good foster caring practices and to help increase confidence in new foster carers.

• Development of a package for primary school students on what responsible pet ownership means.

Recent Achievements in Getting to Zero:

As mentioned above, NARGA is a new initiative. In its infancy we have been able to provide a range of resources for rescue groups in an effort to help develop their capacity to rehome animals, such as: provision of a grants database; volunteering, fostering and transporting resources, pro bono legal services resources, useful links for not-for-profit organisations and a guide to setting up a new rescue group.
