CITY OF CALGARY

The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) was formed as a home for veterinary professionals who want to engage in direct care programs for animals in need and educate the public and others in the profession about animal welfare issues.
HSVMA Rural Area Veterinary Services (HSVMA-RAVS), is their primary direct care program. They are also actively involved in advocating for better public policies for animals and advancing humane alternatives in veterinary education.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DAVIS - KORET SHELTER MEDICINE PROGRAM
The UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program works to prevent millions of animals dying in shelters each year, often as a result of preventable illnesses. At the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine program aims to use veterinary science to protect the health of shelter animals so that more survive to find lifelong homes. This goal is accomplished by:
- Training veterinary students, veterinarians and shelter professionals in all aspects of shelter medicine
- Consulting directly with shelter veterinarians and managers to improve animal care and health
- Conducting research into the most pressing issues affecting shelter animals

IAABC - INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ANIMAL BEHAVIOR CONSULTANTS
The IAABC was founded in 2004, recognizing that the practice of assisting the public with companion animal behavior problems was a growing field that encompassed many different professionals: veterinarians, animal trainers, animal shelter employees, academics as well as practicing consultants who didn't always fit neatly into one of the aforementioned categories.
The IAABC developed a Shelter Division in 2016. The aim of the Division is to create a place where current and future shelter workers can get quality education, information, community and support, with the goal of improving the lives of those working in shelters, as well as the animals and adopters they serve.

Multilingual CatEducational aims to reach as many people as possible with information about how to protect the welfare of cats in Australian communities. The most recently available census data reveals there are over two hundred languages spoken within Australian communities. In some local government areas in urban NSW, for example, 50% of people prefer to use a language other than English at home. There is a need for information on how to keep cats safe and healthy in the languages spoken within Australian communities. Rent With Pets is supported by the Companion Animal Network (ACAN), whose six member agencies aim to make the world a better place for pets. Through national campaigns, partnerships and initiatives, ACAN celebrates the human-animal bond and promotes responsible pet ownership. Part of our mission is to advocate for pet-friendly accommodation. Rent With Pets was established to create a bridge between responsible pet owners and the nation’s landlords, sharing information that will help them work together for the benefit of companion animals.

PetRescue is a not-for-profit organisation that helps to find new homes for lost and abandoned pets. PetRescue believes every homeless pet deserves the chance to find a new loving family, but with rescue groups across the country struggling to feed and care for animals, many pets miss out on homes simply because nobody knows they are available.PetRescue makes it easy for potential adopters to find and save a rescue pet. Their website is the largest online, searchable directory of rescue pets in Australia and it also has a comprehensive information library.

ANIMAL FARM FOUNDATION
Animal Farm Foundation, Inc. has been rescuing and re-homing animals, providing information, resources (including grants) and training shelter professionals, since the mid-1980's.
They currently dedicate their resources to securing equal treatment and opportunity for "pit bull" and "pit bull" type dogs. However, the resources and information available on their website are just as useful for any shelter or pound, anywhere in the world.
HUMAN ANIMAL BOND RESEARCH INITIATIVE FOUNDATION - HABRI CENTRAL
HABRI Central is an online platform for open research and collaboration into the relationships between humans and animals, specifically companion animals. HABRI Central uses a combination of library resources to facilitate the discovery, access, production, and preservation of human-animal interaction research. library resources, community-driven discussion areas, blogs, and user groups all allow you to connect and share knowledge with experts, professionals, and others involved in the study of human-animal interaction. By hosting all of these features in an easily accessible and centralized way, HABRI Central helps unite those involved in the study of human-animal interaction across disciplines while simultaneously lowering access barriers that might prevent the free flow of information among them.
CENTRE FOR SHELTER DOGS
The Center for Shelter Dogs, an initiative of the Shelter Medicine Program and the Center for Animals and Public Policy at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, is dedicated to improving the welfare of homeless dogs cared for by humane organizations, animal control facilities, and rescue groups throughout the nation. Rigorous science-based research and outcome assessment is the cornerstone of all efforts by the Center. Drawing on the expertise of its staff, the Center is able to incorporate clinical medicine and epidemiology into its strategies, establishing a world-class program on behalf of shelter dogs.

Dogs Playing for Life (DPFL) is a program rooted in the notion that a dogs' natural instinct is to play.
In many cases, play groups instantly demonstrate to staff that dogs initially feared as being aggressive or unbalanced, really are social and adoptable. Play groups have proven to be a critical enrichment and assessment tool for animal welfare organizations of all different sizes and functions internationally.
DUMB FRIENDS LEAGUE
The Denver Dumb Friends League, located in Colorado, USA, employs a broad spectrum of strategies to reduce homeless pets in their community and to ensure that as many homeless pets as possible are reunited with their owners or placed in new homes. Growing community involvement in, and support for, their efforts has enabled the League to expand our programs and services while maintaining our commitment to ending pet homelessness and animal suffering.

Dogs Out Loud provides training and education programs for dogs, handlers and adopters that aim to increase the dogs’ adoptability, enhance the dog-human relationship, and improve the reputation of medium to large breed shelter dogs. Catcare.org.au is an initiative of the Cat Protection Society of N.S.W. to provide support to veterinary professionals and ancillary workers such as pound and shelter staff and volunteers, as well as all those working in the promotion of responsible cat ownership and cat care. They have developed a Vet Professional Education Package for Early Age Desexing that includes CPD points for registered Veterinarians.

ALLIANCE FOR CONTRACEPTION IN CATS & DOGS
Across the globe, there is a tremendous need for new methods of sterilization for cats and dogs that are faster, easier, more accessible, and less expensive than surgery. ACC&D works tirelessly to bring together key stakeholders to advance this field, serves as a trusted source for scientific and educational information, and advocates for products to be available to the animals, people, and communities who need them most.
California sheltering report
In the wake of Governor Brown’s proposal to repeal certain existing state laws affecting animal shelters in California owing to budget-related issues, a diverse statewide stakeholders’ group formed and worked throughout 2012 and into 2013 to identify meaningful ways to realize California’s policy “that no adoptable or treatable animal should be euthanized if it can be adopted into a suitable home.”
The stakeholders developed 23 recommendations that California agencies and communities can utilize to help animals, advance the work of animal sheltering, and move California closer toward its goal of saving every adoptable and treatable animal. Some of these changes would require modifications to existing California state statutes; others are “best practices” recommendations that the group believes California animal shelters should strongly consider implementing. Communities should prioritize the implementation of these strategies to improve welfare and outcomes for homeless animals.
